Simple Past Tense

Past Simple is a tense form used to express actions or events that occurred in the past and have already been completed. Generally, the Past Simple is used to state facts or events that have ended with no connection to the present.

Uses of the Past Simple

  • Actions that happened and finished in the past
    • Example:
      • I went to the park yesterday.
      • They played football last weekend.
  • Past habits (that no longer happen now)
    • Example:
      • She worked in a bank five years ago.
  • A series of actions in the past
    • Example:
      • I woke up, had breakfast, and then left for school.
  • Actions occurring at a specific time in the past
    • Example:
      • At 8 o’clock yesterday, we started the meeting.

Common Structure of the Past Simple

  • Positive Sentence
    • Formula: Subject + Verb-2 (past form)
    • Examples:
      • He visited his grandmother last month.
      • They played tennis yesterday.
  • Negative Sentence
    • Formula: Subject + did not (didn’t) + Verb (base form)
    • Examples:
      • She didn’t go to the party last night.
